You can get boxes with the back of them cut-out already (plastic or my favorite is a thin metal). Look for 'low voltage wiring box' and save yourself effort of hacking a high voltage box to pieces. And I haven't seen any volume issues. I have another volume control from radio shack and this one is much better. This enables you to screw the unit to the thin ring but allows the unit all the depth it needs due to having not back to the box at all. this thing allows all the volume that my speakers can possibly handle (running 2 pairs of Axiom M3s on A/B). The radio shack one I installed a couple years ago, and while it performs just fine, there aren't as many volume click positions and the places to screw down the wire into the unit were TERRIBLE. This one installed very quickly, is made very solidly (you have to push pretty hard to get it into a standard box - my only real 'complaint').Also, keep in mind this is low voltage wiring so you don't need to use a 'real' box to put in your wall.
The lack of directions was frustrating at first, but it quickly became apparent that the bracket is necessary since the faceplate is larger than a standard box. They work well, and with the several color choices Phoenix has provided, (white, ivory or bone) they easily fix into most decors. I bought some of these volume controls for several in-ceiling speakers that are being installed in a home under construction.Due to the size of the controller, and the wires going to and from it, I found it best to use a deep box (or a box with no back).I had no real problem installing these.
Make sure you screw down the speaker wires as tight as possible - they can slip out when you are cramming everything back in. Decent volume control. In my installation I mainly use the higher-end of the volume control, but it does the job perfectly and I am pleased. As noted in other reviews, the faceplate does stand off the wall about 1/16" - I'm sure this could be fixed but it wasn't a big deal for me. Installed relatively quickly. You can go ahead and cut out the back of your remodel or new gang box - this thing is deep.
I had a question on one and customer service was great. This is my fourth or fifth control - still cheaper than most on the market and works extremelly well - is of great quality and would non hesitate to buy more. (Love being able to go into any room and turn on the sound :-) Highly recommended product. The install is easy, but made easier if you are putting it into a deep box (ie. wall gang / electrical box).
I put it outside, but in a protected area. I set the outside control to about 5 and then turn the amplifier a little louder than normal. When I go back outside the volume can stay where it is or be turned up for a really good song and then back down without having to go in and out of the house. The control seems to be solidly constructed and fairly easy to install. This volume control works very well. So far no problems. It has very nice detents so you know what level of volume you are at without listening. Its range is from 0 being off to 10 being full volume. I find this helpful as the control is outside and master volume is inside.
